Too hot to be comfortable? What should a baby wear to sleep in a heatwave? | Sproot Baby

When the temperature rises, one question comes up again and again:

"What should my baby wear to sleep in a heatwave?"

It's a fair question. Babies can't regulate their body temperature as efficiently as adults, which means they can become uncomfortable - or overheat - more quickly. The good news is that dressing your baby for warm weather doesn't need to be complicated.

The key is to focus on the room temperature, not the weather forecast outside, and choose breathable layers that can be adjusted as temperatures change throughout the day and night.

Why room temperature matters

To make things simple, we've created a handy Baby Sleep Outfit Temperature Guide (see above) to help you choose the right sleepwear for every summer night.

During a UK heatwave, outdoor temperatures often grab the headlines. But what really matters for sleep is the temperature in your baby's room.

Experts generally recommend aiming for a nursery temperature of around 16-20°C where possible. If your baby's room is warmer than this, you'll want to reduce layers and switch to lighter sleepwear.

A simple room thermometer can take the guesswork out of bedtime.

What should my baby wear to sleep?

Under 16°C

For cooler nights:

If the room drops below 14°C, consider switching to a warmer 3.5 tog sleeping bag.

16-20°C

This is considered the ideal sleeping temperature for babies.

Dress your baby in:

This combination provides warmth without overheating.

20-21°C

As temperatures climb:

The lower tog helps maintain a comfortable temperature overnight.

22-23°C

For warmer summer nights:

At this temperature, many babies no longer need a sleepsuit underneath.

24°C and above

When the heatwave really hits:

Or, if the room is particularly warm:

  • Nappy only

Keeping clothing minimal helps reduce the risk of overheating.

How can I tell if my baby is too hot?

A common mistake is checking hands and feet.

Babies often have cool hands and feet even when they're perfectly comfortable.

Instead, gently feel:

  • The back of their neck
  • Their chest
  • Their tummy

If their skin feels hot, sweaty or clammy, remove a layer. If they feel comfortable and dry, they're likely dressed appropriately.

Best fabrics for baby sleep in hot weather

When temperatures rise, breathable fabrics make a big difference.

Look for:

  • Organic cotton
  • Lightweight cotton jersey
  • Natural fibres that allow air to circulate

Heavy synthetic fabrics can trap heat and moisture, making sleep less comfortable.

At Sproot Baby, our sleepsuits, bodysuits and vests are designed for everyday wear, frequent washing and comfortable sleep, helping parents build a practical wardrobe that works across changing temperatures.

Building a heatwave-ready baby wardrobe

The easiest way to handle changing temperatures is to have a small collection of versatile essentials:

Rather than buying lots of specialist items, a simple capsule wardrobe gives you everything you need to adapt as temperatures change.

That's exactly why Sproot was created - a smarter system for baby clothing that works harder, lasts longer and makes everyday parenting a little easier.

01

Keep the room as cool as possible

Close curtains and blinds during the day to prevent the room heating up. Open windows when outdoor temperatures drop in the evening.

02

Use a fan safely
A fan can help improve airflow, but it should never blow directly onto your baby. Position it elsewhere in the room to circulate air.

03

Skip hats overnight and socks during the day
Babies regulate heat through their heads, so hats should not be worn during sleep. Socks also trap the heat when you're out and about so let their feet be free!

04

Avoid loose blankets
A correctly fitted sleeping bag is a safer option than loose bedding, which can pose a safety risk.

05

Dress for the room, not the season
A cloudy summer night can sometimes be cooler than a warm spring evening. Always check the nursery temperature before bedtime.
